Cole Franklin is an American mercenary who dulls the memories of war with liquor. After fighting in the 1813 Battle of the Thames, he found employment as a hired gun and guide at the remote outpost of Fort William, which is now struggling to survive the decline of the fur trade. Caught in the midst of a brutal winter, with depleted supplies and a dwindling population, the keepers of the Fort blackmail Cole into leading a trading party to a nearby Indigenous village to replenish their stock. They arrive at the village and discover the horrifying remnants of a massacre. They salvage what they can and return to the Fort, but something follows them back. The Fort suffers even greater loss as many of its people are overcome by what can only be described as some kind of madness, giving in to their hunger and consuming their fellow men. As the casualties stack up, Cole realizes that they are in the midst of the legendary Ithaqua. Now, Cole must unite the surviving members of the Fort and put his military expertise to use in their final stand against the beast.
