A rural veterinarian, a beekeeper, a biologist studying bats, a videogame developer, a community Theatre Manager...just ordinary citizens. February 24, 2022 changed everything when Russia, unprovoked, attacked Ukraine! These ordinary citizens refused to flee their homeland and stayed to fight alongside their fellow Ukrainians. They became snipers, coffin builders for mass grave victims, soldiers fighting alongside a parent, triaging the wounded, building drones and raising money to feed the abandoned cats and dogs. This documentary explores the stories of LGBTQIA+ soldiers fighting on the frontlines in Ukraine’s war against Russia. Through intimate interviews and candid footage, the film reveals the bravery, vulnerability, and diverse experiences of these individuals, who, simply by their existence, challenge societal norms while defending their country. At its core, the film highlights that LGBTQIA+ people are no different than any other citizen in their dedication, sacrifice, and courage during times of war. And, the stakes are high for this community. They have been specifically targeted by the Russians to be rounded up, put in camps, and executed. And, they are hated and harassed also by many of their own Ukrainian citizens. With a blend of front-line footage, personal reflections, and moments of human connection, the film delves deep into the intersections of identity, duty, and survival in wartime. By portraying these soldiers and civilians with compassion and complexity, the documentary sheds light on the unique and often overlooked experiences of persons from the LGBTQIA+ community in conflict.
