Director Statement

One night around the dinner table my parents told me the story of how they maintained contact in a long-distance relationship. My mother was in Amsterdam and my father remained at home in their home town running a pub. My parents spoke of how they used to call each other through the only phone in the town that was on the main street. My father remembered people queuing down the street to speak to their loved ones far away. When I told people this story I soon realized that this event was a common occurrence in Ireland. It seemed that every town in the 70’s in Ireland was the same.
It inspired this film. I fell in love with the idea. The romance it brought. The joy. Pat is a reflection of a simpler life and where communication was so hard but the happiness it brought was so easy. Although set in the 70’s and despite modern day methods of communication, Pat is relevant to how much we strive to stay connected to the ones we love and the pain we go through once that is lost.
