BIFF GREEN REEL DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION PARTNERS WITH THE NATURE CONSERVANCY OF THE BAHAMAS

August 16, 2010. BIFF announces a new edition of the ‘GREEN REEL’ Documentary Competition in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy. The Conservancy is sponsoring the ‘GREEN REEL’ competition for its second year to enable students to create documentaries that explore the environmental issues affecting The Bahamas.

The Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF) announced today a call for submissions of documentaries from emerging Bahamian filmmakers between the ages of 15 and 18 to participate in the special competition sponsored by The Nature Conservancy. The topic the documentaries should focus on is the environment and the Bahamian community. Filmmakers should explore how Bahamians interact with the environment and how changes in the environment can impact Bahamian communities. They can focus on one or more of the following environmental issues – biodiversity, climate change, coastal erosion, conservation, invasive species, land degradation, over fishing, pollution, and threatened species/habitats.

The announcement was made by BIFF Founder and Executive Director Leslie Vanderpool, who said "BIFF is always looking for ways to encourage young Bahamians to showcase their talents through film.”

Eleanor Phillips, Director of the Northern Caribbean Office of The Nature Conservancy here in The Bahamas stated “We at the Conservancy want to encourage the youth of The Bahamas to tell us through film how they want the environment of the country to be in the future. After all, we are the stewards of their future.”
